When a property insurance claim is filed after damage caused by fire, flood, storm, theft, or other covered events, policyholders may face either a claim rejection or a claim delay. Although both situations can be stressful, they are legally and practically different.

A claim rejection means the insurance company has made a formal decision not to pay the claim because it believes the claim does not meet the policy’s terms and conditions. Common reasons include policy exclusions, lapse of coverage, damage that falls outside the insured risks, or disputes over policy conditions. Once a claim is rejected, the insurer usually communicates the decision in writing along with the reasons for the denial.

A claim delay, on the other hand, means the claim is still under process and no final decision has been made. The insurer may be conducting a survey, verifying documents, investigating the loss, or completing internal procedures before settling the claim. A delayed claim remains active and may eventually be approved, partially settled, or rejected.

The key difference is that a rejected claim has already received a final decision, while a delayed claim is still awaiting a decision. This distinction is important because policyholders have different rights depending on the stage of the claim.
In India, IRDAI has prescribed timelines for claim processing. After receiving all the required documents, insurers are generally expected to settle or reject claims within 30 days. If an investigation is necessary, it must be completed within the prescribed period, and undue delays may require the insurer to pay interest on the claim amount for the delayed period.

Understanding whether your property insurance claim has been rejected or is simply delayed can help you assess your position and ensure that your rights as a policyholder are protected.
